Am I really coming across this way?

I could use a little advice. I received an e-mail today and am not quite sure what to make of it. Any thoughts?

These are some excerpts...

================================

“A dedicated youth worker, a post-Evangelical, postmodern, ex-fundamentalist, emergent Christian.”

Was this a parody of you? Do you really believe that? Why not add gay basher, intellectual midget, and pompous youth who “knows it all,” to your list?

I honestly could not tell if your blog was a joke, or if you were for real. Please don’t take offense to my comments to add to your bio. I took no offense to your suggestions that the world is flat and that the Bible is the inerrant word of God. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
...
Seminary schools should be educating thinkers, not robots, who don’t really believe “that the reason the world is flat is because the Bible says it. Just like it say [sic] dancing is evil, Jesus drank grape juice, and God hates people who struggle with particular sins...

I was surprised not to see something on your blog that suggested that God wishes us to prosper so that we can kill the evildoers of the tri-axis of evil.
...
Perhaps you could start on a journey out of Maui that is inclusive rather than “preaching” you alone possess the innate spark of divinity as you dive through the waves? Sorry to write to you what you may perceive as being hate mail, but it is truly meant in compassion.
...
Open your heart and mind to God, as you understand him through the Man Jesus, and maybe listen a bit before you pontificate so much. The Man Jesus professed radical inclusion, so I guess maybe his inclusive nature and my constructive criticism may do you some good...Maybe you can rejuvenate institutionalized religion in your lifetime? Or maybe you can help to destroy it? The choice is yours, young man.

I wouldn't worry about him too much. That's what delete buttons are for.

You did nothing wrong, Pete, and answered him with honesty and humility. i applaud you! This is what i hare about emails and blogging, people misinterpret and misunderstand intentions all of the time. I just had a hurtful email from someone i highly respected who accused me of being a stalker. This is so not me and i realize this person has his/her own issues and projecting on me, but it still hurts, dammit! BTW, Great article in Relevant. Why the co-author from relevant?

Thanks Adele - you rock. Sorry someone pegged you wrong, you don't deserve that.

The Relevant article needed "re-tooling" after some controversy got sparked among the Emergent leadership. They assumed the article was going to be another cheap shot.

I did the interviews with Len Sweet, Brian McLaren and Jim Henderson. Tyler helped balance the article with additional interviews, including Tony Jones and Dan Kimball. In the end, I do think it helped create a richer look, so I was happy to have Tyler's help as co-writer.

Peter,

You're fine. Your blogger "friend" appears to have some issues. I'll be sending my bill for the professional analysis soon. Confidentially, I detect parallels to Andrew Murray.

Keep writing the good write.

Sue

Thanks Sue :) Come back and visit any time!

I actually finally spoke again with my radical friend, posted above. He was quite apologetic, and assured me he was new to blogging and didn't quite understand the "culture." He assured me he would come back to the site and dig for a "fuller" view.

You can tell the author of this email came with an already perceive Idea of who you are or what the article was about. Can anybody really know someone from an article. We will never be able to get away from reading something without our own view point. Even those who pose the idea they can be open and judge an idea in neutrality are foolish. Can we get away from ourselves. If we can I want to go on vacation. Even your own ideas on neutrality are your own?? What we know in our minds and the ability to convey it are two different things.

The thing about blogs and e-mails is this: They are cyberbound and anonymous. THose that lambast you don't KNOW you. I know you personally and I know you aren't pompous. You care and that's why you want to communicate so much. You are always reaching out to build bridges and to get people talking to each other. Keep it up.
